Mediacom SmartPad 10.1 S4

The iPad tablet is the most popular on the market, but other manufacturers are not discouraged of course, much that is continuously released alternatives rather interesting from the point of view of the sales price and specifications. This is the case of the new SmartPad Mediacom 10.1 S4, already on sale in Italy at the attractive price of 180 Euros. Here are all of its specifications.

Mediacom is a company that in recent years has been quite good in sales, thanks to the release of products with an excellent price / performance ratio. It’s been a few days of the official announcement of the SmartPad 10.1 Pro, addressed to business customers, and now is the turn of the SmartPad 10.1 S4, Android tablet with 10.1-inch form-factor that not only costs half compared to the iPad, but also it supports traditional phone calls.

Sure, call with a digital tablet is not the most comfortable, especially if we are used to make calls long, but just adopt a headset (Bluetooth or classic), and the problem is solved. Alternatively, we can use the built-in speakerphone, especially useful while we’re driving. The installed operating system is Android 4.4 Kit Kat, and the user interface is personalized but not too invasive. At the moment we do not know if in the future will come or not to upgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Despite the price of 180 euro including VAT, they were not made sacrifices too big in terms of hardware, and even the appearance is very good, with simple lines and elegant at the same time. The corners of the shell are slightly rounded, so as to favor the ergonomics and make more comfortable the use of the device even during longer sessions.

One of the strengths is certainly the touch display, characterized by the diagonal of 10.1 inches. Usually tablets of this price range have panels from 7 or 8 inches, and it is rare to see a digital tablet low cost with a screen like this, slightly larger than the Apple iPad. The focus is therefore on the productivity and usability of applications, not to mention personal entertainment, especially watching videos in high definition and implementation of 2D and 3D video games of the last generation, freely downloadable from Google Play Store marketplace. Obviously at a price below 200 euro you can not expect the same quality of the Retina Display, but the resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels is able to offer a quality quite good image. We would like also to point out that the panel is IPS type, which means that the viewing angles are much higher than standard LCD panels. Not to mention that the front frame is an anti-reflective coating, to use the terminal outdoors under sunlight.

Let’s talk about ‘size: the new SmartPad Mediacom 10.1 S4 has a body that measures 26.5 cm x 1.5 cm x 16.6 cm, and the total weight is 553 grams. And if portability stood at good levels, even performance disappoint. We find a quad core Mediatek MT8382 with an operating frequency of 1.3 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. Unless you have some big claims, this tablet can give a lot of satisfaction. As for the space available for storing apps, documents and files, flash storage amounts to 8 GB, the user freely expandable up to 32 GB through the microSD card slot.

The lithium battery from 5,000 mAh should be able to provide a range rather than good (unfortunately lack of accurate data by Mediacom) and receiver integrated FM lets you listen to your favorite radio stations, simply by plugging headphones into the jack 3.5 mm audio. As mentioned above, this is the modem for 3G connectivity with support GSM and WCDMA, as well as wireless modules Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi. The infrared port can be used to remotely control the TV in the living room, and there are the classic two cameras, a front-facing 2 MP and a rear 5 Megapixel.

Overall, we are faced to a product that does not disappoint at all and which can be safely regarded as a compelling alternative (and less expensive) iPad.
